These white rapids on the Colorado River may seem benign from miles away, but they are treacherous when whitewater rafting. There are over 100 rapids on the Colorado River in Granite Gorge, which is a 1,000 ft deep canyon within the Grand Canyon. The black rock layer at river level (2,450 ft high above sea level) includes Vishnu Basement Rocks (2 billion years ago) which are from the North American tectonic plate colliding with the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. This created heat and pressure that melted the rock into dark metamorphic rock squeezing it up through cracks in the earth to become the basement of the Grand Canyon. The river gets its color from the minerals of calcium-carbonate and copper-sulfate from Blue Springs.
