Photo ID: GC_Grandview4827.jpg Light beams through clouds enlightening the East Rim of Grand Canyon National Park at Moran Point (elevation at 7,160 feet above sea level). This view of the Grand Canyon, on a fairly cloudy day with thunderstorms passing through, proves to be quite beautiful with the interplay of light and shadow. The Colorado River (elevation at 2,450 feet) started carving the Grand Canyon 5 or 6 million years ago. It is flowing in the canyon basin called Granite Gorge, which is a 1,000 foot deep canyon within the Grand Canyon. The black rock layer at river level includes Vishnu Basement Rocks (formed 2 billion years ago) which are from the North American tectonic plate colliding with the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. This created heat and pressure that melted the rock into dark metamorphic rock, squeezing it up through cracks in the earth to become the basement of the Grand Canyon.
