Photo ID: GC_Abyss4727.jpg   South Rim of the Grand Canyon. View from The Abyss (6,720 ft high) of the Colorado River (2,450 ft high) that started carving the canyon 5 or 6 million years ago. The black rock layer at river level includes Vishnu Basement Rocks (2 billion years ago) which resulted when the North American tectonic plate collided with its neighbor, the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. This created heat and pressure that melted the rock into dark metamorphic rock squeezing it up through cracks in the earth to become the basement of the Grand Canyon. On top of the black layer, the gray layer includes Tonto Group (525-505 million years ago).
