Photo ID: GCSnow3025.jpg   South Rim of the Grand Canyon at Pima Point (6,700 ft high) with a rare revelation of all layers of the Grand Canyon including a view of the Colorado River in the foreground. Starting at the horizon the top layer is white Kaibab Formation (270 million years ago hereafter called m.y.a.) which can also be viewed in the foreground, then yellow Coconino Sandstone (275 m.y.a.), pink Supai Group (300 m.y.a.), then deeper pink Redwall Limestone (340 m.y.a.) which is directly on top of the gray layer. This gray rock layer is Tonto Group formed 500 million years ago. The black rock layer at river level is Vishnu Basement Rocks formed almost 2 billion years ago. It is comprised of dark molten rock that squeezed up between two colliding tectonic plates and hardened into the basement of the Grand Canyon. The Colorado River started carving out the Grand Canyon about 5 million years ago. The long gray ridge on the left leads up to a red point that is the Temple of Ra (6,078 ft high). The short gray ridge in the center leads up to a red point that is Tower of Set (6,026 ft high) with the red ridge continuing to the gray point that is the Temple of Osiris (6,637 ft high).
