Photo ID: GCSnow2994.jpg South Rim of the Grand Canyon in winter. View from Mohave Point (6,800 ft high) of white Kaibab Limestone Formation (270 million years ago hereafter "m.y.a.") in the foreground. Below in the canyon basin is the Colorado River that started carving the canyon 5 or 6 million years ago. The black rock layer at river level includes Vishnu Basement Rocks (2 billion years ago) which resulted when the North American tectonic plate collided with its neighbor, the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. This created heat and pressure that melted the rock into dark metamorphic rock squeezing it up through cracks in the earth to become the basement of the Grand Canyon. On top of the black layer, the gray layer includes Tonto Group (525-505 m.y.a.). The red layer includes Supai Group (315-285 m.y.a.) which is sedimentary rock that formed at sea level when Arizona was beachfront property. The tan pointy peak in the center, just below the horizon, is Osiris Temple (6,637 ft high). To the right, the lower snow-covered flat top on the pink mountain is called the Tower of Set (6,026 ft high). On the far left, follow the thick gray ridge to where it ends on the right with a square small box peak that is called the Temple of Ra (6,078 ft high).
