Photo ID: GCSnow2973.jpg South Rim of the Grand Canyon at Hopi Point (6,800 ft high) with a rare exposure of the Grand Canyon Supergroup. Starting at the horizon the light top layer is Kaibab Formation (270 million years ago hereafter called m.y.a.) which can also be viewed in the foreground, then yellow Coconino Sandstone (275 m.y.a.), pink Supai Group (300 m.y.a.), then deeper pink Redwall Limestone (340 m.y.a.) which is directly on top of the gray layer. This gray rock layer is Tonto Group formed 500 million years ago. Here is the rare exposure, the dark gray layer with red peeking out is the Grand Canyon Supergroup, comprised of red shale, limestone and dark lava. The last layer is the black rock layer in the bottom left corner named Vishnu Basement Rocks formed almost 2 billion years ago.
